There isn’t much that is new to Gary St. Amant in the world of fendered short track racing, but the Ohio native has managed to find something to cross off his racing to-do list for the first time in his life over the next few weeks.

St. Amant has put together a deal to enter one of the biggest Super Late Model races in the Deep South – The Rattler at South Alabama Speedway in Opp. It is an event that St. Amant has never run before in his long and accomplished career.

Not only has St. Amant not raced in the Rattler, or at South Alabama Speedway, he’s never even seen the track.

"I’ve never even been to the track and that’s another good reason to go," said the sly veteran.

Although the deal to drive Turner’s racecar is a new one with all of the details yet to come together, The Rattler might not be the only race that St. Amant runs in the car.

"We’re just putting together the details and we don’t have anything lined up sponsor-wise yet," said St. Amant. "I think that the car will have the #7 on it, but right now I don’t know yet.

"We very well could be doing more races together," said St. Amant. "He’s talked about it and it fits into my schedule well right now, so we’ll see what happens."

In recent seasons, St. Amant has been busy with a few projects other than racing. He’s also worked as a driver coach to several drivers, including former NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year Landon Cassill. Now St. Amant has a new student with some close ties to his longtime sponsor Jeg’s Performance – a company with strong roots in the sport of drag racing.

"I’m putting together a deal right now to help out Cody Coughlin," said St. Amant. "He’s the oldest son of John Coughlin of Jeg’s. Right now he’s racing quarter midgets and the plan to get him some laps. Eventually, we’ll probably end up doing some ASA Late Model and CRA races. He’s always had to desire to turn left."
