Weekend Featuring the Rich Vogler Classic this Weekend at Winchester
Speedway
Winchester, IN (August 17, 2010)
– Racing action will return to the famous High Banks of Winchester
Speedway with the legendary Old Timers Weekend, which will include the
Rich Vogler Classic for the USAC National Sprint Car
Series this Saturday and Sunday. The event honors the memory of the
great Rich Vogler who won 171 USAC events during his career including
10 wins at Winchester Speedway. Five of those wins were in a Sprint
car, the other five were in a Midget.
The Old Timers Weekend will feature
over 50 vintage racecars that will be on display Saturday and Sunday
and will also have parade laps on the famous half-mile track were many
of the cars once raced. Seeing all those vintage cars on the track
again is always a spectacle open wheel fans will not want to miss.
New Castle, Indiana native Tracy
Hines got the victory in last years Rich Vogler Classic. Hines powered
by Cole Witt on the outside on lap 37 to grab the lead and the win in
the 40 lap event. Witt held on for second, Bobby East was third,
Darren Hagen was fourth with Jacob Wilson in fifth. Hines also set a
new track record in qualifying for last years Old Timers Weekend with
the first ever under 14 second lap
in a non-winged Sprint Car at Winchester with a lap of 13.964 seconds
for an average speed of 128.903 mph.
Levi Jones comes into Sunday’s event
as the current points leader in the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Series
points. Jones is 77 points ahead of second place Damion Gardner.
Former Rich Vogler Classic winner Bryan Clauson is third in points,
only 12 points behind Gardner. Jerry Coons Jr. is fourth in points
with Chris Windom in fifth place.
Shane Hmiel led all 50 laps to win
last Saturday night’s 51st "Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial" USAC
Sprint race at Salem Speedway. Trailing Hmiel at the checkered flag
was fast qualifier Hines, Clauson, Henry Clarke and Brian Gerster.
The SuperPro Late Model Series will
make their first appearance at Winchester Speedway Sunday in several
years. Tommy Cook, winner of the series last event Saturday night at
Angola Motor Speedway, is the series new points leader by 24 points
over Jason Dietsch. Dietsch is a two time winner with the series in
2010, both victories came at Baer Field Speedway. Tommy’s older
brother Al Cook Jr. is third in points, with Rick Everidge in fourth
and Claude Plante Jr. is fifth in points.
Dietsch has competed at Winchester
Speedway several times with the CRA Super Series including a fourth
place finish in last season’s Winchester 400. Tommy Cook has also
competed in CRA Super Series events at Winchester while brother Al got
a win at Winchester in a Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman Series event. A
full field of cars is expected for Sunday’s event.
2009 series Champion Tim Dilg
comes
into Sunday’s Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts event with a
commanding 80 point lead over second place Jess Drook. Justin Brown,
winner of the series last event on July 18th at Winchester
Speedway, is in third place, he is 24 points behind Drook. Carey
Abrell is fourth in points, he is 36 points behind Brown. Phill Iliff
is fifth in points, he is eight points behind Abrell. Other
CRA FWD Compacts
Winchester winners so far this season include Kevin Claborn on May 16th
and Mark Mason on May 23rd.
There will be an open practice for
all divisions on Saturday, pit gates open at 12noon, practice will run
from 2 to 6pm. The Vintage cars will be on display behind the
grandstands on Saturday, there will not be a charge to view the cars
or to watch open practice from the grandstands on Saturday. There will
be a Bristol Cup Race party on Saturday night.
Pit gates open on Sunday at 8:30am,
spectator gates open at 10am. Practice will begin at 10:30am with
qualifying starting at 1pm. The race program will begin at 2pm and
will include heat races and the 40 lap Rich Vogler Classic for the
USAC National Sprint Cars, a 50 lap feature for the SuperPro Late
Model Series and heat races and a 20 lap feature for the Vore’s
Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts, plus parade laps for the Vintage
racecars. There will be free camping all weekend.
