Series Notes Heading Into CRA 125
The CRA Super Series will make their seventh
appearance at Columbus Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 28 in the
CRA 125. This marks the second consecutive event in the Buckeye State
after the series made its annual appearance at Toledo Speedway on
Friday, August 13. On Saturday, practice begins at 1 p.m. with the
racing program starting at 4. Tickets are $18 for adults and $5 for
kids. Following the racing action a free concert will feature the Blue
Oyster Cult.
First ’10 Repeat Winner
Defending series champion John VanDoorn became the first driver to
score multiple victories during the 2010 racing season. The driver of
the Reaction Snow & Ice Melter/Magic Transportation car visited the
winner’s circle for the first occasion in the season opening event at
Anderson Speedway and then was victorious in a thrilling event at
Toledo.
Career Best Finish for Gullata
Finishing fourth in the Klotz Synthetic Lubricants 100 presented by
Spray Power marked the career best finish for Nick Gullata. The Ohio
racer is among the contenders in the Perfect Circle RaceCars Rookie of
the Year Standings. Gullata has continued to show steady progress with
recent finishes of 12th at Plymouth and 10th at
Angola in July.
6 Races, 6 Winners
In the previous six events at Columbus, six drivers have scored
victories. Canadian Hall of Famer Junior Hanley won the inaugural
event at the Ohio track in September of 2002, beating Joel Kauffman
and J.R. Roahrig to the finish line. Other winners include Fred
Campbell (2003), Scott Hantz (2004), Jack Landis (2005), Bobby Parsley
(2006) and Robbie Pyle (2007).
No Front Row Winners
Starting on the front row at Columbus isn’t a guarantee of contending
for a race victory. In the six events, no driver has won the race from
the front row. Jack Landis has the distinction of winning from the
deepest with starting eighth in 2005 and collecting the win.
Strong Record
Scott Hantz has put together an impressive record at Columbus, scoring
three podium finishes and a victory in 2004. As of late the driver of
the No. 72 EMF Corporation entry won the Welch & Wilson Motorsports
Redbud 300 at Anderson in late July and followed up that performance
with a third-place showing at Toledo in mid August.
Looking to Continue Turnaround
Brian Campbell has experienced his share of bad luck this season.
Crossing the finish line in fifth position at Toledo might be the
boost the team needs to finish with some solid performances and
contend for some victories. He has made two starts with CRA at
Columbus with a best showing of 16th position in 2007. In
that event he led the opening 33 laps and was taken out of contention
after being caught in a crash with four laps remaining in the event.
Campbell won the 2006 Main Event at Columbus, one of the top Outlaw
Late Model events in the country.
Close Battle for Third Position
Five drivers are in the midst of a battle for third position in
the championship standings with only 33 markers separating third
ranking Tommy St. John from seventh Brian Campbell. Behind St. John is
Terry Fisher Jr., 10 points back, with Rick Turner ranking fifth. A 12th
place finish dropped Jason Dietsch to sixth with Campbell in seventh
position.
