Series News & Notes – August 30, 2010
The CRA Super Series returns to the historic
Winchester Speedway for the annual Labor Day tradition on Sunday,
September
5 and Monday, September 6. The McGunegill Engine Performance 100 will
mark the 31st appearance for the series at the high-banked
half-mile oval.
Second EDCO Welding Fast Time Award
John VanDoorn earned fast time honors at Columbus Motor Speedway with
a lap of 13.859 seconds. He timed in 0.035 seconds quicker than Tommy
St. John. The top four drivers were separated by 0.057 seconds.
Strong Showing at Hometrack
Local driver Tyler Nuckles turned in a fine performance at his
hometrack, leading the opening 95 circuits before contact with
VanDoorn sent Nuckles spinning. He finished on the lead lap in 15th
position.
Top 10 Finish
Mike Rush was the top
finisher from the drivers that compete on a regular basis at the
.333-mile oval of Columbus Motor Speedway. He wheeled the No. 15
Sports on Tap/AK Photography/Creative Tool & Die/Hawk Brakes/Sterling
Coaches car from 13th on the starting grid to 10th
at the checkered flag of the JVM Enterprises/Nelson Kohman 125.
Early Race Accidents Equal Short Night
Three series regulars experienced bad luck that ended their bids for
strong finishes at Columbus. Adam Purdy placed 24th after
trying to avoid an accident on the 27th circuit. Justin
Alsip and Nick Lay retired from the event on the opening couple of
circuits because of damage from accidents.
Former Winchester Winners
Four former winners at Winchester Speedway will be in action this
weekend for the McGunegill Engine Performance 100. The four former
winners include Scott Hantz, Jeff Lane, Tommy St. John and Rick
Turner.
Winning Consecutive Events at Winchester
Showing the high competition level of the series and how difficult
it’s to win at Winchester Speedway, only once has a driver won
consecutive races at the highbanked track. That took place when Brian
Ross won the Labor Day event in 1999 and then the prestigious
Winchester 400 crown.
Looking for a Better Result
Two-time Winchester winner
Tommy St. John had one of the best cars in May, but slight contact
from eventual winner Ross Kenseth sent St. John into the inside
retaining wall on the main straightaway and caused terminal damage to
his Welch & Wilson Motorsports Chevrolet. He led the opening 51
circuits before the accident.
"We are really looking forward to getting
back to Winchester. Kenseth and I had the dominant cars in the Spring
event. Hopefully we can get this Hamke hooked up on the highbanks.
Winchester is one of my strong points. I’m hoping to get a "W" out of
that event," said Tommy St. John.
Y-Town Hustler
Yorktown’s Rick Turner is
always one of the pre-race favorites at Winchester Speedway. He
carries in momentum after crossing the line in fourth at Winchester in
May. He finished off the 2009 season with a seventh place run in the
Winchester 400 and was victorious in the 2008 Labor Day race at the
half-mile oval.
First Appearance for Two Drivers
Georgia’s T.J. Reaid will attempt to make his debut at Winchester
Speedway. He will drive the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 51 Toyota.
Busch earned the 2010 Winchester 400 victorie and Brian Ickler earned
runner-up honors driving the car in last year’s Labor Day event.
Michigan youngster Jay Nieweik also plans to
compete at Winchester for the first occasion. The advice from his
driving coach Bob Senneker will be very useful. Senneker experienced a
tremendous amount of success when the original ASA Series competed at
Winchester Speedway, winning seven Winchester 400's including five in
a row.
Season Debut
Justin Matson will compete in his first CRA Super Series event of
the 2010 season. The Cromwell, Ind., racer will drive the No. 55 Klotz
Synthetic Lubricants Chevrolet. Matson made one appearance at
Winchester last season, finishing in 20th position.
Veteran Returns
Four-time series winner J.R. Roahrig returns to action at
Winchester. In the Manning Service 100 in May, Roahrig crossed the
finish line in third position behind Kenseth and Hantz. In four
appearances this season Roahrig has collected two top-five finishes
and four top 10s.
