Labor Day Weekend
World Stock Car Festival Up Next For Winchester Speedway
Winchester, IN (September 1, 2009) –
There will be plenty of racing at Winchester Speedway
this weekend with the tracks annual Labor Day Weekend World Stock Car
Festival that will see six different racing classes competing on the
famous High Banks including the CRA Super Series late models, the Howe
CRA Late Model Sportsman Series, the O’Reilly USA Modifieds, the CRA
Street Stocks, the Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts, and
Thunder/Enduro Cars.
The CRA Super Series will
compete in the McGunegill Engine Performance 100 Presented By
Crown
RV and Boat Cleaner, it will be
the second stop for the series at Winchester Speedway leading up to
the 38th Annual Winchester 400 on Sunday, October 18th.
Three time CRA Super Series Champion Scott Hantz got the victory in
the Manning Service 100, the opening event for the Winchester Speedway
on May 17th. Hantz, the events EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier,
started fifth after drawing a five for the events invert. Jeff Lane
took advantage of his front row starting position to grab the early
lead. It didn’t take long for Hantz to work his way to Lane’s bumper.
Hantz
worked for several laps trying to pass Lane before getting by on lap
43, from there Hantz cruised to a four second victory.
The CRA Super Series point’s battle
has tightened up heading into this weekend’s event. With two straight
series victories at Toledo and Nashville, Hantz as narrowed John
VanDoorn’s points lead to 12 points with only four points events left
in the 2009 season. Aaron Pierce is in third place in points, only one
point ahead of Rick Turner in fourth, Turner was the winner of last
season’s Labor Day Weekend event. Boris Jurkovic is currently in fifth
place in series points. To date 28 cars have pre-entered for Sunday’s
event from 10 different states.
Steve Minich Jr. comes in to this
weekend’s event as the point’s leader with the Howe
CRA
Late Model Sportsman Series with a series leading three victories to
date. Second place Charlie Hanna has narrowed Minich Jr.’s lead down
to 17 points heading into Monday’s feature event. Keith Sterkowitz is
currently in third place, 36 points behind Hanna. Sterkowitz will do
double duty this weekend, he will also make his debut with the CRA
Super Series. Leading series rookie Steve Stacy is fourth in series
points, only seven behind Sterkowitz. Ric Pfiefer is in fifth place in
series points. Terry Jones got the win in the series only event at
Winchester Speedway this season.
The point’s battle in the CRA Street
Stocks is very tight coming into this weekend’s event with two time
series Driver Champion Joe Beaver holding a four point lead over Jason
Thompson. Beaver
won
his first event of the season at the series last event at Mt. Lawn
Speedway on August 23rd. Josh Burton is in third place in
series points, he is only six points behind Beaver. Rich Boyer is in
fourth place, he is 39 points behind Burton. The #32 Miles Motorsports
team is in fifth place in series points with drivers Bret Miles Jr.
and Randy Hoppes. Burton got the win in the series only point’s event
at Winchester Speedway this season. Scott Neal won a non-points event
on July 2nd.
The Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD
Compacts will also be in action with feature events this weekend on
Sunday and Monday. Tim Dilg currently leads the series points by 60
points over 2008 Champion Rex Zimmerman in second. Farmland
native
Brian Redmond is currently third in series points, he is 35 points
behind Zimmerman. Leading series rookie Jeff Williams is fourth in
series points. Bill Charles is currently fifth in series points. The
series had a record 47 cars enter the series last event on August 23rd
at Mt. Lawn Speedway. Dilg, Zimmerman and Redmond have all pick up
series point victories this season at Winchester Speedway. Charles won
a non-points race on July 2nd.
This weekend will be the second
appearance for the O’Reilly USA Modified Series at Winchester Speedway
this season in the Fire Bottle 40 on Monday afternoon. Edgerton,
Ohio’s Bud Perry got the victory in the O’Reilly USA Modified’s 50 lap
feature on July 19th. Perry looked like he would be
settling for third when Scotty Tomasik who was leading, and second
place Mike Stacy make contact on the backstretch on lap 32 sending
Tomasik hard into the outside wall. Tomasik was done for the day,
series officials placed Stacy at the rear of the field, he then
decided to park his car for the day. Perry inherited the lead and held
off a hard charging Kyle Jones to get the win. A full field of
Modifieds is expected as they prepare for the 4th Annual
Run For The Gun Shootout on the Winchester 400 Weekend.
This weekends racing action will also
include feature events for the Thunder/Enduro Cars on both Sunday and
Monday in their only visit to Winchester Speedway this season. Shane
Cullen and Tom Gossar got victories in the Thunder/Enduro Car feature
events on Labor Day Weekend last year. Both features were two of the
best of that weekend. Cullen got the victory on Sunday night, while
Gossar got the win on Monday afternoon.
The weekend will start with an open
practice for all divisions on Saturday. Pit gates open at 10am with
rotating practice sessions from 1 to 5pm. Pit gates open on Sunday
morning at 9am, practice begins at 11:30am, qualifying will start at
3:30pm. Sunday nights racing action will begin at 6pm with heat races
for the CRA Street Stocks, Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman, Vore’s
Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts, and Thunder/Enduro Cars. The
O’Reilly USA Modifieds will have a Dash for their top qualifiers and
heat races for the rest. There will be 20 lap features for both the
Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts and Thunder/Enduro Cars. After
the racing action there will be a party in the Pavilion behind turn 1
of the racetrack with live music from Cross Tie starting at 9pm.
Pit gates will open on Monday at 9am.
There will be a short warm-up session for all divisions at 11am, Last
Chance races will begin at 12noon. The first of six feature events
will take the green flag at 1pm.Go to
