Radisson Grand Rapids
125 up Next for CRA Super Series at Berlin Raceway
Salem, IN (October 6, 2009) –
The Radisson Grand Rapids 125 at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan is
the next CRA Super Series event this Saturday, October 10th
at the famed .438-mile tricky oval. The event was originally scheduled
for August 8th, but was postponed because of weather. As in
the past this event will pit the best of the CRA Super Series against
a tough group of local competitors in what
is always one of the best races of the season.
Earlier this season a large crowd
came to Berlin Raceway on Wednesday, June 10th to see
NASCAR driver Kyle Busch race in the CRA sanctioned Rowdy Busch 125
special event. Brian Campbell kept the family domination of CRA events
at Berlin intact with a victory over a very strong field of cars
including Busch, coming from mid-pack to take the lead on lap 88. The
race had three different leaders run out to seemly insurmountable
leads and second through seventh place change hands several times
during the race, including a couple of three wide passes with the guys
racing for fourth, fifth and sixth in the last five laps. Chris Koslek
would have his best ever race with CRA in a hard fought second place
finish. Chris Eggleston finished in third in his first race at Berlin,
Terry Van Haitsma finished fourth after a tough battle with fifth
place finisher Busch and sixth place Scott Hantz.
10-time
Berlin
Raceway Champion Fred Campbell is the all-time CRA Super Series winner
at Berlin with three victories. Brian Campbell is now second with two
straight victories. Other CRA winners at Berlin include Scott Hantz,
former Berlin Champion Ross Meeuwsen and Tim Curry.
Former Berlin regular Johnny VanDoorn
comes into Saturday’s event as the CRA Super Series point’s leader.
The 2007 series rookie of the year has two victories so far this
season including wins with his new Kaos Motorsports team at Anderson
Speedway and Salem Speedway. The Coopersville native has ran well at
the series events at Berlin in the past but has been unable to get a
win, that is something he will be out to change on Saturday.
Three time series Champion Scott
Hantz comes into Berlin second in CRA points, he is 43 points behind
VanDoorn and leads the series in victories this season with four,
including the last series event at Baer Field Speedway. Counting
Saturday’s event there are only two point events left in the 2009
season. Aaron Pierce is currently third in points, he is 56 points
behind Hantz. Veteran series racer Rick Turner is fourth, he is 27
points behind Pierce. Terry Fisher Jr. is in fifth place in series
points, 69 points behind Turner. Leading series K & N Filters Rookie
of the Year competitor Tyler Roahrig is sixth in points, he is only
eight points behind Fisher. Other top series drivers expected for
Saturday’s event include Jason Shively, Kenny Tweedy Jason Dietsch,
Brian Muick and rookies Nick Lay and Brandon Fagin.
Saturday’s event is will have plenty
of local Michigan talent racing in it including Fred and Brian
Campbell. Brian will be behind the wheel of the Perfect Circle
Racecars entry, he is currently leading the ASA Late Model Challenge
Series points with one event left in that series. Fred will jump
behind the wheel for the first time in 2009 driving the Port City
Racecars entry, a combination that has been to victory lane numerous
times at Berlin Raceway. Two time Berlin Outlaw Late Model Champion
Tom Thomas will team up with legendary racer and now car owner Tim
Steele for Saturday’s event. Thomas competed in last year’s event in
Tim Curry’s car, he was the event’s fast qualifier and finished in
ninth.
Several other Berlin Outlaw Late
Model competitors will be behind the wheel of a CRA Super Series
template car Saturday night including 2009 Berlin points’ runner-up
Terry VanHaitsma, also Chris Anthony, Alec Carll and Caleb Bisacky.
Other Michigan drivers entered include Chris Koslek, Phil Bozell, Josh
Slade, John Long, Jordan Dahlke, Seth Moody, Keith Herp and Matt Hall.
To date there are already 27 cars pre-entered for Saturday’s CRA Super
Series event.
There will be an open practice on
Friday, pits open at 4pm with practice from 5 to 8pm. Pit gates open
on Saturday at 12noon, the race program will begin at 6pm and will
include the Radisson Grand Rapids 125 along with a special event for
the Berlin Outlaw Late Models, season Championship events for the
Berlin Young Guns and the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinders plus School
Bus races.
