Kyle Busch First to
Commit to Race in Anderson Speedway’s Tribute to the Heritage of ASA
Tuesday Night Show
Includes Tribute to the Robbins Family Era of ASA and a 300-Lap CRA
Late Model Race
Anderson, IN
(February 20, 2009) – Anderson Speedway officials announced today
that the Champion Racing Association (CRA) Super Series race scheduled
on Tuesday, June 16 will now be a
300-lap
race to honor the heritage of the original American Speed Association
(ASA). Anderson Speedway was the birthplace of ASA, and a staple on
the legendary racing circuit’s yearly schedule. Being prior home to
the corporate offices and leadership of the Robbins family has always
made Anderson even more special in ASA’s history.
Fans remember the
days when ASA brought the top stars in racing through Anderson on a
yearly basis, with iconic drivers like Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin,
Dick
Trickle,
the late Alan Kulwicki, Bob Senneker, Mike Eddy, Ted Musgrave, Johnny
Benson, Gary St. Amant and many others. Current NASCAR Cup stars Jimmy
Johnson, Kyle Busch, Mark Martin, David Stremme, Matt Kenseth, Tony
Raines, Mike Garvey and Reed Sorenson used the Robbins led ASA to help
launch their careers to the pinnacle of racing.
"Race fans will
remember the ASA ‘Redbud 300’ being a highlight of the year for area
fans, and we are building this event to honor the history of ASA and
those Anderson events," noted Anderson Speedway President Rick Dawson.
"We expect to have some key figures from that era present to help us
honor, what many considered, the greatest short track series ever."
Dawson went on to
note, "the selection of a Tuesday night for this event had a lot to do
with trying not to interfere with the racers’ other weekend schedules,
as well as making it easier to schedule more dignitaries to be a part
of this tribute event."
While details are
still being finalized, NASCAR Cup star Kyle Busch is the first ASA
veteran to commit to coming back and racing in the event to honor
ASA’s history. Officials note that other high profile ASA veterans are
expected to be part of the entry list for the CRA Super Series 300-lap
race. Many in the racing industry have noted that the CRA Super Series
is the closest racing to what ASA was in its "hey day": touring stars
competing against local stars in Super Late Model stock cars.
"This is an exciting
opportunity for CRA to be a part of Anderson Speedway’s homage to the
Robbins’ era of ASA," noted CRA co-owner R. J. Scott. "As a kid, I
grew up as an ASA fan, and
then
later had the privilege to work at ASA for the Robbins family. It
makes this very special for me personally."
"When people compare
the CRA Series to the original ASA, it is a huge compliment," Scott
continued, "and it’s probably no accident. You cannot sit in the
stands and watch their races, then get to work behind the scenes with
them, and not pick up some of the qualities and procedures of a great
organization."
Tentative plans call
for the event to be a one-day show, with practice and qualifying
during the day, followed by a pre-race celebration of the Robbins era
of ASA and its dignitaries. The green flag is schedule to fall at 7:30
p.m. on the 300-lap tribute race. More details will be announced in
the coming weeks. Fans can follow all the updates and details by
