Illiana Speedway owner/promoter Mike Mikuly
announced before Saturday night's program plans for a major
improvement to the speedway for the 2008 season.
New aluminum grandstands have been purchased,
and will be delivered to the speedway in late July. Demolition
on the old grandstands will begin on Oct. 1.
"Hopefully, if all goes right, we should have
the grandstands up in time for us to have pictures for the
banquet in November," Mikuly said.
The new grandstands were purchased from Atlas
Bleachers in Chicago.
The sign outside of the speedway Saturday
night had, in addition to details of the night's program, a
message from Mikuly that read, "Not for sale."
"Did you like that? I knew that would get
everybody's attention," Mikuly said, smiling. "That means it is
not for sale. We're here 60 years. I'd like to see it go 120.
It's here to stay. It's not going anywhere.
"We've been doing some things with the parking
lot and the pit area trying to get the grindings in there and
get a solid base. No more, 'Sorry, we've got to call the races
because the grounds are wet.' We can get by with wet grounds
now. We're going racing."
Mikuly said that in addition to racing in
2008, there are other plans for the speedway.
"Concerts, open functions to the town," Mikuly
said. "We're trying to work with the town on fireworks displays
and a bunch of other stuff. We're moving forward. We're here for
a long time to come."
