Winchester Speedway Releases Impressive 2007 Schedule

ARCA RE/MAX Series and Winchester 400 Return

Winchester, IN (January 22, 2007) – Officials from Winchester Speedway and track promoters Champion Racing Association (CRA) have released the 2007 schedule for the legendary high banked ½ mile track in Indiana. Speedway owner Charlie Shaw has secured CRA to promote and manage the Speedway again in 2007 after successful 2005 and 2006 seasons. CRA leaders R. J. Scott and Glenn Luckett have prepared a diverse and entertaining eight-race schedule based on the successful events in 2006 that will include an ARCA RE/MAX Series 200 lap event and the famed Winchester 400.

After an open practice on Saturday, April 21rd, the season will open on Sunday, April 22nd with a mix of the best in open wheel and stock car racing with the USAC National Sprint Car Series Rich Vogler Classic and the CRA Super Series Late Models. Last season’s Rich Vogler Classic event brought out a standing room only crowd to see 16-year-old Bryan Clauson got the victory in his first ever race at Winchester Speedway. Clauson showed no fear in grabbing the lead from his pole position starting spot, leading the entire 30 laps to claim the victory. Clauson’s best friend young Darren Hagen finished in second holding off veteran open wheel racer Dave Steele who finished in third. The Manning Service 100 for the CRA Super Series will also be featured that Sunday with veteran series racer Jeff Lane looking to repeat as that events winner after leading all 100 laps in last April’s event. The season opener will also feature racing action from the CRA Street Stocks and CRA FWD Compacts.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series will make a welcome return to Winchester Speedway for a two-day show on Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th. Last season’s 200 lap ARCA RE/MAX Series feature was one race fans will remember for a long time as 8 time series champion Frank Kimmel came back from almost losing a lap after running out of gas late in the event to make a daring pass coming out of turn four to claim the win. The ARCA RE/MAX Series cars will practice and qualify on Saturday with their 200-lap event taking the green flag at 1pm on Sunday afternoon. The Lincoln Welder ARCA Trucks will also be part of this huge racing weekend with a 50-lap feature on Saturday. The CRA Sportsman will also be in action on Saturday along with a special non-points CRA Street Stock event. There will be a party in the pavilion on Saturday night with the Richmond NASCAR Nextel Cup race on the big screen. The CRA Street Stocks will have a 50-lap points event on Sunday after the ARCA race.

Sunday, June 10th will be a special day for local race fans, as Winchester Speedway will present the 1st Annual Randolph County Appreciation Day, which will feature $5 tickets for all Randolph County residents. Race fans will have to present a valid ID with hometown listed in order to receive the special priced tickets. The USA Modifieds headline the racing action that day along with the CRA Sportsman, CRA Street Stocks and CRA FWD Compacts.

The "King Of The Wings" Sprint Car Challenge will return on Sunday, July 22nd featuring the country’s top Winged Sprint Car drivers from the Auto Value Super Sprints and HOSS Wing Sprints plus many others. Greenfield, Indiana’s Cameron Dodson raced his way into history, by winning his second King Of The Wings Show in a row. Dodson had to work a little harder than his 2005 win, taking the lead on a restart on lap 7 from early leader Tim Cox. Fast Qualifier Jeff Bloom would work his way to get second, but never had a shot at Dodson who trilled the large crowd with his brave moves to pass any competitor who was in his way. Dodson used both the high line and low line and even attempted one pass on the flat of turn four. Dodson got to wear the crown again in victory lane, and proved once again he is the King Of The Wings at Winchester Speedway. The CRA Sportsman and CRA Street Stocks will also race on that day.

The fifth event of the year will take place on Sunday, August 12th. The Super Pro Series Crate Engine late models will make the first ever appearance on the famous High Banks of Winchester Speedway in a 75-lap feature event. Also, the American Modifieds will make their 2007 debut on the High Banks that afternoon. The CRA Sportsman and CRA FWD Compacts will also be in action that afternoon.

The historic World Stock Car Festival is scheduled on Labor Day Weekend after a very successful return in 2005 and 2006 and will once again feature a great combination of racing, camping, music and parties. Saturday, September 1st will be an open practice day for all cars and the grandstands will be free to the public. Sunday and Monday, September 2nd & 3rd will see eight different stock car divisions compete for their World Stock Car Festival crown. The CRA Super Series Late Models will headline the action, along with the Super Pro Series and American Modifieds. The weekend will also include racing for the CRA Sportsman, CRA Street Stocks, CRA FWD Compacts and ThunderCars on Sunday only. The other seven groups will practice, qualify and race in qualifying races (where applicable) on Sunday to set the fields for "Features Only" on Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd, except for the CRA FWD Compacts which will have a feature event on Sunday and Monday. There will be a party in the pavilion on Sunday night, it will be tough to top last season’s Labor Day party, but it will be fun trying!

CRA Street Stocks will take the main stage on Sunday, September 16th in a 200 lap, $5000 to win race that is expected to see 50 to 75 cars take the green flag for one of the most exciting races of the season. Last years 200 lapper featured some of the best racing of the year as the CRA Street Stock drivers showed their talent and ability once again to race a long distance race on the high banks. Owensboro, Kentucky native Beau Mitchell once again showed his dominance on the Winchester track taking the victory, one of five he would get in the five CRA Street Stock events he ran at Winchester Speedway in 2006. The victory did not come easy as Sellersburg, Indiana driver John Collins battled Mitchell through out the event, swapping the lead several times. Collins would finish in second followed closely by Chuck Cook, who also stayed in the lead pack through out the event. Sharing the Highbanks that day will be the CRA FWD Compacts in their biggest event of the season, a 75-lap feature that will pay $1500 to the winner.

On Sunday, October 14th Winchester Speedway will see the CRA Super Series return for the prestigious 36th Annual Winchester 400, an event that saw racers from all over the country come to challenge the Highbanks for a grueling 400 lap shootout last year. 2006 CRA Super Series Champion Scott Hantz was the beneficiary of a lap 380 crash that took out the only two cars on the lead lap racing for the lead. Chris Gabehart was trying to fight off the challenge of North Carolina’s Clay Jones when the cars made contact coming out of turn two, resulting in both cars making hard contact with the backstretch wall. Both cars were destroyed, but both drivers walked away with no injuries. Hantz would go on to get the victory with Alabama’s Augie Grill in second, CRA regular Tommy St. John in third, Jim Crabtree Jr. in fourth and John Heck in fifth, his best all time CRA Super Series finish.

The Winchester 400 Weekend will start off on Friday, October 12 with open practice for all cars. The CRA Sportsman and CRA FWD Compacts will have their 2007 season championship events that night plus racing action in a non-points special event for the CRA Street Stocks. Saturday, October 13 will feature Winchester 400 practice and qualifying plus practice, qualifying and features for the Super Pro Series, the CRA Street Stocks season Championship event and the 2nd Annual Winchester Run For The Gun between the American Modified Series and the USA Modifieds.

Details on season tickets and a detailed schedule of events with times will be posted on the Winchester Speedway web site at www.winchesterspeedway.com. To contact CRA about marketing or racing opportunities at Winchester Speedway, interested parties can call the CRA office at 812-883-0455.
