Special from Johnny VanDoorn HS Motorsports

VanDoorn On A Roll For HS Motorsports

Johnny VanDoorn and his HS Motorsports team are on a roll heading into the final half of the 2007 season. The Coopersville Michigan teen has won four races so far in 2007 in three different cars for two different teams. VanDoorn started his winning ways on May 12th at the Berlin Raceway. VanDoorn wheeled his family owned #71 outlaw late model to the checkered flag, becoming the youngest driver to win a outlaw late model feature at the historic track. Towards the end of May, VanDoorn joined the HS Motorsports team of three time ARCA Champion Tim Steele and has continued to flex his muscle across Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

VanDoorn’s first win for HS Motorsports came at the Dixie Motor Speedway on June 15th. VanDoorn led all 100 laps en route to a dominating performance that has had the short track racing community buzzing ever since. VanDoorn went on to score another victory at the Toledo Speedway on July 20th. VanDoorn started 7th and led the final 37 laps. VanDoorn’s most recent win was his first in the Indiana based Champion Racing Association (CRA Super Series). On August 4th, VanDoorn led 126 of 250 laps at the high banked quarter mile Anderson Speedway. Currently, VanDoorn is third in the series points battle and has a commanding lead in the Rookie of The Year points battle.

“2007 has been the kind of year I’ve been waiting for. Finally we have had some good luck and with the help of Tim Steele, Chip Caputo and the whole HS Motorsports team, I think more wins are around the corner. Tim and I have really clicked on setup ideas and to have a multi-time champion crew chief like Chip Caputo wrenching on your car, you can’t help being excited.” VanDoorn added “ when I started driving for Tim, he already had a great team in place. Chip, Dave Schneider, and Ron Luyk have been with Tim for awhile and are all great at the jobs. Plus Adam Chase and my little brother Ben came over with me, so that helped make the transition smooth.”

Besides VanDoorn’s four wins this season, he’s also run well in special races across Michigan. On July 4th, he finished second in the Late Model Jones held at the M40 Speedway, taking $10,000 home in the process. He then finished seventh in the Kalamazoo Klash, after starting dead last. Besides his win in the CRA Series, VanDoorn has three top five finishes, a total he’ll look to increase this weekend at Illiana Speedway. “We tested the day before the original race date and learned a lot. I have never raced there before and was a little lost my first time on the track. After my first run, I watched a couple of other drivers and learned the track. I’m looking forward to going back there and trying to back up our win at Anderson.

After the Illiana race, VanDoorn and his team will once again turn it’s attention to a couple of outlaw late model races. The first will be at the Berlin Raceway on August 15th, which will be his first race at Berlin since he won there earlier this year. Then, the team hopes to be able to head to Owosso Speedway for it’s final outlaw race of the season. The team had a motor failure after having the fastest car in practice on July 28th.
