Winchester, IN (April 17, 2007)
–Champion Racing Association (CRA) and Winchester Speedway officials
announced today that the NASCAR Nextel Cup star, David Stremme, will
be racing
in
the 36th Annual Winchester 400 presented by Ed Martin
AutoGroup and Renegade on Sunday, October 14th. Stremme, who has been
in the top 12 in points all but one week of the season, positioning
him for the Chase for the Championship, will bring his own team to
Winchester in his return to his short track racing roots.
The popular Indiana native raced many times at
Winchester Speedway during the development of his career when racing
with CRA and the American Speed Association. Stremme is also a former
track record holder at Winchester and has a CRA Super Series victory
at the similarly high-banked Salem Speedway.
"I couldn’t be more excited about getting to
go back to Winchester with our late model team," Stremme noted from
his home in North Carolina. "Through the years, either as a kid
growing up, or as a young racer, the Winchester 400 has always been
the pinnacle of short track racing in the Midwest. A victory in the
400 would make for a special trophy on my mantle. Plus, the Winchester
400 has always been a great year end celebration for the fans, so it
will be fun to visit with them before the race."
Stremme, driver of the Nextel Cup Series’ #40
Coors Light Dodge, is currently in the midst of his breakout year with
NASCAR. He has also been ranked in nascar.com’s "Top 10 Power
Rankings" most of the season and is currently in position to be part
of the NEXTEL Cup Chase for the Championship. Where his new Super Late
Model team is concerned, Stremme will run a Robert Hamke Chassis,
powered by the economical McGunegill Sealed Engine; the same power
utilized by last year’s Winchester 400 pole sitter/track record holder
Danny Jackson, and eventual race winner Scott Hantz.
Winchester Speedway owner Charlie Shaw expects
Stremme to use that
equipment
to be a legitimate contender for the 2007 Winchester 400 title, and is
happy to have the young star back at his track. "It’s exciting for all
of us, especially our fans, to have David back here racing again,"
Shaw noted. "I’ve been a big Stremme fan since the early days of his
career, when we became good acquaintances through mutual friends. He’s
a great racer, made even more evident by his recent successes, and
he’ll bring even more excitement to 400 Weekend."
Through the years, the Winchester 400 has been
one of the Crown Jewels of all of Short Track racing. The 400 laps on
the fastest ½ mile in the world has helped prepare some of the
best racers in the world. Drivers like Mark Martin, Rusty
Wallace, Alan Kulwicki, Dick Trickle and many, many more have all been
part of the history of the 400 at Winchester. Last year’s event was
won by 2-Time CRA Super Series Champion Scott Hantz, one of the most
respected drivers in all of short track racing. Hantz thanked Speedway
owner Charlie Shaw in his comments at the Series’ year-end awards
banquet for "having the Daytona 500 of Short Track racing at his
track."
Adding to additional excitement and interest
in this year’s Winchester 400 is its inclusion in CRA’s Super Late
Model $50,000 Triple Crown. One driver could take home a $50,000 bonus
if he wins all three legs of the Triple Crown: September 22nd in the
Circle Track Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis,
October 14th in the Winchester 400 at Winchester, and
November 4 in the All-American 400 at Music City Motorplex in
Nashville. If no driver is able to win all three, there is a $10,000
bonus for any driver that wins two of the three. Complete details on
the $50,000 Super Late Model Triple Crown are available at
