Barnes Overcomes Adversity To Get 6th Place Finish At Anderson Speedway

Louisville, KY (July 21, 2005) – Chuck Barnes Jr. overcame a lot of adversity Saturday night to get a 6th place finish in the 39th Annual Anderson 400 at Anderson Speedway. Barnes Jr. qualified 6th and looked ready to move to the front when his car lost power steering on lap 49.

“At first I thought I had a tire going down,” remarked Barnes. “I slowed down and was trying to stay on the lead lap until I could get in the pits and have my crew check the car. The caution finally came, luckily right before I got lapped, unfortunately we didn’t get a good pit stop and I ended up losing a lap anyway. I knew it was going to be a tough race from there with no power steering.”

Barnes fought through out the middle portion of the race to get his lap back. He finally did when the leaders pitted and he got to restart in front of them because he didn’t pit. A quick yellow got him and several others back on the lead lap.

Barnes made another pit stop later in the event to change right side tires. Problems with lug nuts on the right rear resulted in Barnes going a lap down to the two leaders at that time. Barnes was on the same lap with four other racers battling for the third position when he couldn’t avoid contact with Tom Hernly Jr. who had been cut off by Jay Middleton. The cars bumpers locked together resulting in the whole front-end of Barnes car being ripped off. After several pit stops under the yellow, Barnes was able to return to the field to finish the race. Barnes finished in 6th place, one lap down to winner Eddie Hoffman.

“It was a pretty good finish considering everything that happened,” stated Barnes. “This was our first time out in my new Port City car, we had to really work over the entire weekend to get the car dialed in. I want to thank everyone who helped us out with the Anderson 400 weekend.”

Barnes will be off to Charlotte, North Carolina next week. On Wednesday, July 27th Barnes will be at Lowes Motor Speedway getting laps with the Buck Baker Driving School. Stewart Automotive located in Salem, Indiana, a long time supporter of Chuck Barnes Jr. Racing, paid for the trip to the Buck Baker Driving School were Barnes hopes to get some valuable experience driving the heavier cars on radial tires before he starts his Roush Racing “Gong Show” test, which is scheduled to begin on July 31st.

Barnes hopes to return to competition with the CRA Super Series in the Great Lakes International Trucks 125 at Berlin Raceway on Saturday, August 20th.
