Rick Turner's trip to Southern Indiana's
Salem Speedway on Saturday night resulted in a 3rd place finish behind
2004 Salem Speedway Late Model Champion Keith Gardner, who passed Pete
Mayden on the white flag lap to get the win in the 50 lap season
championship event. Mayden turned a near record lap of 16.530 to top the
nineteen cars on hand for Saturday's show held on to get 2nd. Junior
Hanley has the current record lap of 16.485 on the high banks of Salem
Speedway.
Other Sunoco Super Series drivers getting
some laps on the challenging 1/2 mile racetrack before the October 24
series championship event at Salem Speedway included Jeff Lane who came
back from an early spin to finish 5th. Lane was the second fastest
qualifier with a lap of 16.786.
Kenny Tweedy qualified 10th in Floyd
Fehl's machine, but dropped out early with mechanical problems. Sunoco
Super Series current points leader Chuck Barnes Jr. lost a timing belt
in practice and was done for the evening.
Both Keith Gardner and Pete Mayden filed
entries for the Sunoco Super Series season championship event at Salem
Speedway on October 24th Saturday night.
