Tim Phillips Wins The
Lefthander Challenge For The Second Time
Salem, IN (October 29,
2004) – Kalamazoo, Michigan driver Tim Phillips has won the 2004
Sunoco Super Series Lefthander Challenge, beating out
veteran series race Junior Hanley at the series season championship event
last Sunday at Salem Speedway. The Lefthander Challenge awards a Bare
Offset Lefthander Chassis to the Sunoco Super Series driver who is in the
top fifteen in final series Owner Points that advanced the most positions
in series point events during the 2004 season.
Tim
Phillips, who had steadily worked his way into position to claim his
second Lefthander Challenge Award thanks to a continued string of bad luck
suffered by Junior Hanley at the end of the season, had entered the Salem
Speedway event at three gained positions behind Hanley. Hanley had his day
end on Sunday at lap 83 after heavy contact with the inside turn one
guardrail while exiting the pits. Hanley’s car suffered extensive front
right damage that could not be repaired. Hanley lost fourteen positions in
the event while Phillips gained nine by finishing 11th after
starting 20th. Phillips ended up with a twenty-position lead
over Hanley with 72 total gained positions during the 2004 season. Hanley
was in second with 52, Jeff Lane finished in third with 36 gained
positions.
Phillips, a winner of the
Lefthander Challenge in 2002, joins former two-time
Sunoco Super Series Champion Brian Ross, a two-time Lefthander Challenge
winner in 1998 and 1999, and Jim Crabtree Jr., won the award winner in
2001, and in 2003, as the only two-time winners of the Lefthander
Challenge. Other past award winners includes 2000 Series Champion and 2000
Rookie Of The Year Scott Hantz in 2000, Mt. Morris, Michigan’s Bobby
Murany won the award in 2003 driving for veteran Michigan car owner Brian
