Point System Adjusted for CRA/Sunoco Super Series
D.N.F.’s and D.N.Q.’s to be Less
Punitive – Post Season Awards to 20 Positions
Salem, IN (March 15, 2004) –
Champion Racing Association/Sunoco Super Series officials announced today
adjustments to their point system used to determine the season long
championship and Rookie of the Year honors. The new system is identical to
the one previously used, where qualifying points and race points for
positions 1 through 26 are concerned. The new system, however, will award
the same points for positions 26 through the end of the field. With the
new system, the last place finisher will earn 50 points regardless if
starting field is 26 or more.
The standard Sunoco Super Series
starting field is 26, but some events start more due to the size of the
race track, the promoter’s desires, or size of the entry list. This change
will make the effect of falling out of a race early with a larger field,
the same as falling out of a race early where the starting field is
smaller. For a team that is competing for recognition in the top 20 in
points, this makes the points distribution more consistent and fair when a
competitor finds trouble early in a race.
Recognizing that the season starts
with a couple of well attended events, and wanting to encourage continued
participation from the competitors, Series officials have also announced
changes for the teams failing to make feature events. Officials wanted the
benefit of attending the event to be greater and the effect of not making
the event less. With the changes, teams that fail to make the feature will
be ranked by the results of the last chance race(s), qualifying results,
or in some cases, a non-qualifiers race. The highest of those not making
the event will receive 49 points, with a one point drop per position, to
25 points. Teams that present a car for competition but fail to make a
qualifying attempt will receive 25 points.
In related news, the Series also
announced that five more positions were added to post season awards, due
to early response from competitors for the 2004 season. Teams that finish
16th - 20th in the final standings will be eligible
for year-end cash awards and prizes. Teams in these new positions must
have participated in 75% of the Series events.
For those teams competing for Rookie
of the Year honors, the same system used to determine the honor in 2003,
will be used again in 2004. Rookie teams will be able to drop their worst
two races and the resulting point standings will determine the Rookie of
the Year winner.
The CRA/Sunoco Super Series season
will commence at Anderson Speedway on April 17th. Track owner
Rick Dawson along with Series officials, have already committed to an
additional purse for a non-qualifiers race if over 40 cars are presented
for qualifications.
