Goodyear To Sponsor Sunoco
Super Series Event At Mansfield Motorsports Speedway
Salem, IN (June 2, 2004)
–
Representatives of Mansfield Motorsports
Speedway
and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have announced that Goodyear will be
the sponsor of the 100 lap Sunoco Super Series event at Mansfield
Motorsports Speedway on Saturday, June 12th. The Goodyear 100
will be the second visit to the newly refurbished half-mile racetrack for
the Sunoco Super Series. Track owner Michael Dzurilla and General Manager
Jerry Smith have transformed Mansfield Motorsports Speedway into one of
the premier short track facilities in the country. Located just outside
Mansfield, Ohio, the track recently hosted a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
race that was sold out to 20,000 plus spectators.
A huge
crowd of almost 10,000 fans, the biggest crowd at Mansfield Motorsports
Speedway during the 2003 season, witnessed one of the best Sunoco Super
Series races in 2003. 1998 Sunoco Super Series Champion Brian Rievley took
the early lead from his outside pole starting position. Rievley lead the
first 37 laps before being passed by Canadian Racing legend Junior Hanley
on lap 38. Hanley would lead through lap 92 before Rievley made a daring
inside pass to retake the lead on a restart on lap 93. Rievley would hold
off 2002 Sunoco Super Series Rookie Of The Year Andy Ponstein to get his
first win since his return to racing after taking some time off from the
sport. Hanley and Fred Campbell put on another great battle for third and
fourth.
2004 is the third
consecutive season that Goodyear has been the Official Race Tires of the
Sunoco Super Series. In addition, this is the third season that Goodyear
has sponsored the Goodyear Performance Awards at each Sunoco Super Series
point’s event. The driver advancing the most positions in the top five
finishers and as well as the driver advancing the most positions in the
sixth through tenth finishers at each event get a $150 bonus from
Goodyear.
Headquartered near Mansfield
Motorsports Speedway in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear goes racing for a number of
reasons, two of the most obvious reasons are to advance tire technology
and provide exposure for the company through marketing and advertising
opportunities. Tire technology proven at the track is readily transferred
to improving consumer tire performance. Marketing opportunities capitalize
on continually increasing audience sizes, both at the track and watching
races on television, and link Goodyear tires to racing, high performance
and technology.
Today, motorsports is the
fastest growing spectator sport in the United States. Goodyear will
continue to be a leading race tire supplier to the industry and consumers
will continue to benefit from the advanced technology that makes the leap
from track to street. More information is available at

Pit gates will open at
Mansfield Motorsports Speedway on Saturday, June 12th at
12Noon. Sunoco Super Series practice will begin at 3:30PM with qualifying
at 5:30PM. The evening’s race program will begin at 7PM and will be
highlighted with the running of the Sunoco Super Series Goodyear 100.
