On Saturday night, Junior Hanley found his way to Victory Lane in Super Late Model competition at New Smyrna
Speedway. That night, he said that he didn’t even think his car was as good as it could be.
With a night off on Sunday, and a day Hanley and his team could spend just working on the car and making it better,
Junior came back on Monday night and dominated the competition once again. For the second-straight race, Hanley
started on the pole and led every lap on is way to Speedweeks win number two.
Hanley, a Sunoco Super Series regular, jumped into the lead in front of Justin Drawdy, pulled away and never looked
back. Wayne Anderson, who charged up to second from his ninth-place starting spot by the end of the race, appeared
that he might have had something for Hanley, but
The laps quickly ran out, giving Junior a comfortable lead in the point standings.
“Once again, starting position was everything here,” said Hanley, who drew the number one pill after
qualifying, meaning the field would start “straight-up” from their qualifying times. “I
couldn’t believe that I pulled the number one pill. That really put us in a position. I still
think the car can get even better than what is has been.”
Now in three races, the Super Late Model division has produced one pass for the lead, coming on opening night when
Mike Fritts passed Jack Landis for the lead and win. Saturday and Monday nights saw Hanley lead from the pole
to the finish without being passed once. In the NASCAR Tour-type Modified division, there has yet to be a pass
for the lead.
“There are just a lot of good cars here,” said Scott Hantz, another Sunoco Super Series regular who finished
third on Monday night. “It is almost impossible to pass anyone here though without laying a bumper to them
and pushing them out of the way like what happened to us tonight. That is about all you can do to get around
someone. The only other thing is that hope something happens to their car, because these drivers are not going
to make mistakes too much.”
When asked why the drivers from the Sunoco Super Series (including Hanley, Hantz, Landis and Eddie Van Meter) have been
doing so well, Hantz just said that the series is full of talent that doesn’t get enough credit.
“Everyone thinks we are just a bunch of Hoosiers up there, but there are some really quality drivers and cars up
there in that series. We are definitely underrated. I think there is just as much talent up there as there
is anywhere else in this country. Hopefully, our driving good down here will help show that.”
However Anderson showed on Monday that you can pass on the tight New Smyrna Speedway. After qualifying ninth,
Anderson quickly made his way through the field, working his way up to second before the checkers fell.
“This shows that I’m back,” said Anderson, who struggled on opening night of Speedweeks and only ran
a handful of laps on Saturday night. “We just ran out of laps there at the end. We definitely had
something for him (Junior) there. We could have got him. Oh well.”
Anderson and Hantz put on quite a show while battling for second with Anderson finally pushing Hantz out of the way.
Wayne Anderson's #84 showed the scars of getting by Scott Hantz late in the race... those scars included a loss of some
gray paint.
In the Limited Late Model division, former ASA competitor Jason Boyd led from start to finish to capture the Late Model
50-lapper. ASA rookie Joey Miller was racing for second when he was spun head first into the outside wall.
