Lane Leads Flag to Flag to Win Anderson 150
Anderson, IN (April 17, 2004) -
Jeff Lane
is a hard man to pass when he has the lead, for the third time since last
May he lead a race from flag to flag winning the first race on the Sunoco
Super Series Schedule for 2004. Qualifying fifth fastest after limited
practice due to having the flu on Friday, Lane found himself on the front
row when fastest qualifier Chris Gabehart drew a 6 on the invert putting
himself in sixth position, with Terry Fisher, Jr. on the pole and Lane on
the outside.
“It is great to knock the snow off this thing and get out and win a race
early, especially here. Everything seemed to be together with the whole
team working especially well tonight, Brandon on the radio kept me out of
a lot of trouble, and the car ran perfect.” Lane stated in victory lane.
“I still not feeling well, a friend told me I looked like I had one foot
in the grave and one on a banana peel earlier and to tell the truth I
still feel that way, but winning helps.”
In
his only other front row start with the Sunoco Super Series Terry Fisher,
Jr. started on the pole of the Anderson 150 last year, this year he also
started on the pole again and battled with Lane for seven laps never more
than a fender behind him in a very exciting side by side battle to get the
early lead. After taking the lead Lane was challenged by Fisher for many
laps before Fisher dropped back when a rear end bolt loosened forcing him
to the pits to stop the leak at about the 90th lap.
On
lap 41 the race was red flagged when Brett Jursik spun in middle of the
third and fourth turn stacking up Anderson favorite and Sunoco Super
Series Rookie Joe Beaver and Jason Setser among others that completely
blocked the track. Beaver and Setser were forced out due to problems
caused by the accident.
Lane was challenged by Chuck Barnes, Jr. who finished second about a car
length behind Lane. Bobby Parsley finished third, with Eddie Van Meter
off to a great start setting second fast time and finishing 4th
having his best finish since the July 4th race at Angola in
2003.
The 2004 Rookie class made them selves known in this opening race when
Rookie Chris Gabehart was the Corteco Fast Qualifier and finished sixth
putting him in the early lead for Rookie of the Year.
Wisconsin
native and Sunoco Super Series Rookie Frank Kreyer finished fifth and is
only 8 points behind Gabehart. In all 8 Rookies started the Anderson 150,
(the most to start a Sunoco Super Series race since May of 2000) with 4
still running at the end, and 3 in the Top Ten. The Backstretch
Performance/Reed Cams/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the Race was Frank
Kreyer with Chris Gabehart getting the second highest finishing rookie
right behind Kreyer in sixth.
The win gives Lane the early lead in the season point championship, with
104 points. Barnes is in second with 103, followed by Van Meter with 100,
Parsley with 99 and rounding out the Top Five is Gabehart with 98 points.
The Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger was Junior Hanley, who
started twenty-third after an uncharacteristically rough day in qualifying
which found him getting into the
Anderson
150 as a 2003 Points Provisional, he then charged through the field to
finish eighth. The Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move of the Race went to
Jeff Lane
holding on the outside for several laps barely ahead of Terry Fisher, Jr.
before finally getting in front of Fisher Jr. on lap 8. Lane also
receives the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway Leader Award. The Gladiator
GarageWorks Crew Chief Of The Race award went to Lane’s Crew Chief Hayden
Butler. Goodyear Performance Awards went to Chuck Barnes Jr. and Junior
Hanley.
The next Sunoco Super Series event is May 15 and 16 at Indianapolis
Raceway Park. It will be a 100-lap event on the 16th with the Hooters
Northern Pro Cup Series.
