Columbus, OH
(September 7, 2003) – Battle Creek, Michigan’s Fred Campbell got his
third win of the Sunoco Super Series season in Sunday’s Federated Auto
Parts 150 presented by K95.5 at Columbus Motor Speedway, during the 1st
Annual Federated Auto Parts Buckeye Bash. Starting from his 3rd starting
position, worked his way around Bobby Parsley and early race leader Andy
Ponstein.
Just like at his
earlier wins, Campbell had to battle the early leader who started on the
front row. Andy Ponstein took the early lead and led the first 58 laps
holding off a very competitive Bobby Parsley, who tried to pass Ponstein
on nearly every lap. Campbell worked his way around Parsley and beat
Ponstein on a great move on the outside. Campbell led the rest of the
way for his third win of the year and his 11th straight Top 5
finish in a Sunoco Super Series event.
"This was a great win
for my team and my car owner Vern Slaugh," commented Campbell. "The
Sunoco Super Series regulars are always tough, adding in Ken Schrader,
Kenny Wallace and Gary St. Amant probably makes this one of the
strongest field of racers I have ever beaten! This is a tough track to
pass on so when I got that good run on the outside around Parsley, I
figured I might as well go for the whole thing!"
The Buckeye Bash
featured NASCAR stars Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader racing in their
first Sunoco Super Series race flying over to Columbus Sunday morning
after the Saturday night NASCAR Winston Cup race at Richmond
International Speedway. Wallace finished 5th in series
veteran Bull Baker’s car with Schrader finishing 7th in Andy
Ponstein’s backup car. After a bad-qualifying run, Schrader came from 19th
to 7th to give him the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams
Hardcharger award. Wallace started 5th had worked his way to
4th when a hard charging Gary St. Amant, an ASA Racing Series
regular, pushed his way past Wallace before being bottled up behind the
Ponstein/Parsley battle for second.
Dan Finkbeiner, Crew
Chief for Fred Campbell, was the Gladiator GarageWorks Crew Chief Of The
Race. Tim Ice was the Terra Horticultural Services/Yockey Motorsports
Marketing Fast Qualifier. Tom Hernly Jr. was the Hubler Automotive
Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie Of The Race. Gary St. Amant and Kenny
Schrader earned Goodyear Performance Awards. Fred Campbell got the $400
Convenient Tire/Cometic Gaskets Halfway Bonus. Doug True received the
Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move Of The Race Award for several great
passes to finish 15th after going to the pits early and restarting at
the tail of the pack.
The next Sunoco Super
Series event will be the Sunoco 150 on Saturday, September 13 at
Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana.
