Sunoco Super Series 2003
Points Championship and Rookie Title To Be Decided In The 34th Annual
Car Brite 400 At Winchester Speedway
Salem, IN (October 1, 2003) -
For the first
time since 1999, the Sunoco Super Series has taken over the sanctioning of
the 34th Annual Car Brite 400, which will be held this weekend
on the famed high-banks of Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana.
This prestigious event was sanctioned for several seasons by NASCAR as an
All-Pro Late Model Series event and even more seasons by the ASA Racing
Series, which had returned to sanctioning the event in 2000 through last
season. The Sunoco Super Series agreed to sanction the event in 1999 with
the knowledge that ASA would take it back over in 2000. Two time Sunoco
Super Series Champion, and current Hooters Pro-Cup Series driver Brian
Ross claimed the victory of that 400-lap event in 1999 over his brother
Scott Ross. Other notable drivers in that field included current NASCAR
Busch Series driver David Stremme, two time ASA Racing Series winner in
2003 Peter Cozzolino, ARCA RE/Max Series drivers Matt Hagans and Vern
Slaugh, 2002 NASCAR Southeast Series Champion Jeff Fultz.
The 34th Annual Car Brite 400 will be the
2003 Sunoco Super Series points’ championship event with a maximum of 110
points available if a driver can be the events fast qualifier and win the
event. Going into Sunday’s event 21-year-old Shepherdsville, Kentucky
native Bobby Parsley holds a 34-point lead over Canadian racing legend
Junior Hanley. Parsley, Hanley and 2002 series champion Scott Hantz have
been at the top of the series points since the beginning of the season.
Hantz has seen his chances of a second championship slip over the last
couple of series events, but he is still in the running 50 points behind
Parsley. Hanley, who finished second to Joel Kauffman in last season’s
championship battle by two points, does have the pleasure of seeing a
driver he has tutored challenge him for the 2003 championship. Hanley has
help guide Parsley in his Sunoco Super Series racing over the past several
seasons and Parsley has campaigned a Hanley Chassis to the points lead
which includes two series victories at Anderson Speedway including the
stock car racing classic Anderson 400.
Long time series veteran Jeff Lane holds down the 4th
position in points 112 points behind Parsley. 5th place is currently held
by JR Roahrig, who will not be competing in the Car Brite 400 this weekend
after his car suffered extensive damage in a practice crash at Rockford
Speedway two weeks ago. Rounding out the top ten in points are Jim
Crabtree Jr. in 6th, Eddie Van Meter in 7th, Chuck
Barnes Jr. in 8th, Ken Muller’s Sunoco sponsored #94 team which
has been piloted primarily by series veteran Todd Oliver is in 9th
, with Terry Fisher Jr. in 10th.
21-year-old Louisville, Kentucky native Chuck Barnes
Jr. has seen a huge lead in the 2003 Hubler Automotive Group/Blake
Carburetion Rookie Of The Year standings slip away recently with a streak
of bad luck, until the series event at Rockford Speedway on September 21st.
Barnes now holds a 21-point lead over Michigan’s Tom Hernly Jr. and a 35
point lead over 17 year old Ossian, Indiana native Terry Fisher Jr. Both
Hernly and Fisher Jr. suffer DNF’s at Rockford Speedway.
The 34th Annual Car Brite 400 weekend will
start on Friday with practice and first round qualifying for the Sunoco
Super Series. On Saturday the series will have practice along with second
round qualifying. The 34th Annual Car Brite 400 will take the
green flag at 1PM on Sunday. For more information on this weekend’s events
