Mansfield Motorsports Speedway
Welcomes Back The Sunoco Super Series in 2004
Salem, IN (November
18, 2003)
Sunoco Super Series officials, along with Mansfield
Motorsports Speedway General Manager Jerry Smith, have announced that the
Sunoco Super
Series
will have a 100-lap event at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway on Saturday,
June 12, 2004. Track owner Michael Dzurilla and General Manager Jerry
Smith have transformed Mansfield Motorsports Speedway into one of the
premier short track facilities in the country. The
banked ½ mile oval, located just outside Mansfield, Ohio, is presently
undergoing some additional improvements for the 2004 season. The facility
recently announced it would host a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event on
Saturday, May 16th in addition to an ASA Racing Series event
and two Hooters North Pro Cup events in 2004.
We are extremely happy to be returning to
Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in 2004, remarked R.J. Scott, Managing
Partner of the Sunoco Super Series. It is a privilege to be able to take
our series to such a great facility. I want to thank Mike Dzurilla and
Jerry Smith for allowing the Sunoco Super Series to be a part of their
impressive 2004 schedule of events. We are expecting a great field of
cars, especially with the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway Late Model rules
being so close to the Sunoco Super Series rules!
A packed house of close to 10,000 fans saw a
spectacular race by eventual winner Brian Rievley in the Mansfield 100
this past June. Rievley, the 1998 Sunoco Super Series Champion, took the
early lead from his outside pole starting position. Rievley lead the first
37 laps before Junior Hanley slid by to take the lead on lap 38. Hanley,
who had battled from his tenth place starting position to take the lead,
kept the lead until a restart on lap 93. Rievley, who stayed in contention
even after being passed by Hanley, got a great restart and was able to
power by Hanley to take the lead on lap 93. Rievley went on to win, while
Andy Ponstein got by Hanley to finish 2nd. Hanley hung on to
finish 3rd followed by Fred Campbell in 4th and Dave
Jackson in 5th.
