Sunoco Super Series Schedules Return
Visit To Berlin Raceway in 2004
Salem, IN (November 23, 2003) –
The Sunoco
Super Series will make a return visit to
Berlin
Raceway for a 150-lap event on Saturday, June 19, 2004. The track, which
is located in Marne, Michigan, about 8 miles west of Grand Rapids,
Michigan has had one of the top short track programs in the Mid-west for
several years. The challenging 7/16-mile oval has been the proving grounds
for several great racers including former ASA Racing Series Champion and
NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Johnny Benson, who is also part owner of Berlin
Raceway.
Last season Berlin Raceway was the only Sunoco Super
Series event in Michigan, yet the series has continued to attract numerous
participants from that state. Michigan natives who competed with the
series in 2003 include three-time series winner in 2003 and ten time
Berlin Raceway Late Model Champion Fred Campbell and his son Brian who are
both from Battle Creek. 2002 Hubler Automotive Group/Blake Carburetion
Rookie Of The Year and first time series winner in 2003 Andy Ponstein from
Hudsonville and 2002-rookie runner-up Tim Phillips, who is from Kalamazoo.
2003 Rookie Of The Year runner-up Tom Hernly Jr. from Lansing, and 13th
place finisher in season points in 2003 and winner of the Lefthander
Challenge Bobby Murany, who is from Mt. Morris.
Other Michigan drivers who participated with the
Sunoco Super Series in 2003 include Dave Kuhlman from Howell, Greg Taylor
from Brooklyn, Ross Meeuwsen from Zeeland, John Greg from Fruitport, John
Belott from Mt. Morris, Harold Fair Jr. from Canton, Aaron Hulings from
Rockford, Doug True from Dowagiac, Chris Orr from Martin, and Billy Shotko
from West Olive.
Last season’s Sunoco Super Series event at Berlin
Raceway was a memorable one as Fred Campbell and Scott Hantz put on an
exciting battle for the win, one of the best the series has ever seen. Tom
Hernly Jr. took advantage of his pole starting position to lead the first
20 laps before track veteran Fred Campbell, the events fast qualifier,
came from his 6th place inverted starting position to grab the
lead on lap 21. Campbell kept the lead until former series champion and
rookie of the year Scott Hantz, in a brand new Finishline Fabricating
Chassis, got around Campbell to take the lead on lap 63. Campbell wasn’t
going to give up the battle yet. Campbell took advantage of lap traffic to
get back around Hantz on lap 94. Campbell kept the lead until lap 113,
when a hard charging Hantz showed he wasn’t going to settle for second at
the first time visit for the Sunoco Super Series at Berlin Raceway.
Hantz went on to take the win over Campbell. A late
run by Dave Kuhlman got him a third place finish. Ross Meeuwsen, 2003
Super Stock Champion at Berlin Raceway, took his rented Andy Ponstein
machine to a fourth place finish. Veteran asphalt and dirt late model
driver John Grega got fifth in the Port City Racecars house car.
