For Mansfield Motorsports Speedway This Weekend
Salem, IN (June 26, 2003)
–
The Sunoco Super Series is finally ready to
make it’s first ever appearance at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway this
Saturday, June 28th. The series was originally scheduled to
race at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway on May 10th but that
event was canceled because of wet weather. New track manager Jerry Smith
worked out the details to get the Sunoco Super Series back at the newly
refurbished half-mile facility for this Saturday’s Mansfield 100.
Track owner Michael Dzurilla has
transformed the half-mile oval at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway into one
of the finest short track facilities in the country. The track has already
been seen on national television twice this year with the May 3rd
Hooters Pro Cup event that was televised taped delayed on Speed Channel
and the June 21st ASA Racing Series event that was broadcasted
live on Speed Channel.
Canadian Racing Legend Junior
Hanley, last week’s series winner at Winchester Speedway, is a former
winner at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in a template Late Model with the
now disbanded Iceman Series. Hanley will have some stiff competition at
Mansfield Motorsports Speedway from Fred Campbell who finished second at
the Sunoco Super Series event at Berlin Raceway on June 14th.
Former series champion Brian Rievley has tested at Mansfield Motorsports
Speedway and will have his dad Bill Rievley, the Crew Chief for 2002
Sunoco Super Series Champion Joel Kauffman who finished fourth in the
Hooters Pro Cup Race at Mansfield on May 3rd, in his pits.
Akron, Ohio’s Scott Baker will make his second start of the season with
the Sunoco Super Series Saturday night after a 6th place finish
at Berlin Raceway that earned him the a Goodyear Performance Award and the
Lane Automotive / ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award.
There will be several drivers
making their first appearance of the 2003 season with the Sunoco Super
Series. Barry DeSalve Jr., a former competitor with the Iceman Series,
will be the first ever driver from Pennsylvania to compete with the Sunoco
Super Series. Mike Smith will also compete for the first time with the
Sunoco Super Series this Saturday. Smith made a hand full of starts with
the Iceman Series and use to compete against 2002 Sunoco Super Series
Champion Joel Kauffman in the Allison Legacy Cars Series.
Kyle Edwards, who has made
selected starts with the Sunoco Super Series over the past two seasons
will make his first start with the series this Saturday. Edwards, form
Grafton, Ohio, has competed at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway occasionally
this season in their Keystone Light Super Cups Division, claiming a
feature win a couple of weeks ago. Wadsworth, Ohio’s Jack Smith, who
competed in three series events in 2002, will make his first start of the
season driving for car owner Dave Ehret. Smith has been thrashing to get
his car fixed from a practice crash at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway
several weeks ago when a right rear shock broke sending Smith hard into
the outside retaining wall.
Pit gates will open for the
Sunoco Super Series at 9AM, with their practice scheduled from 12Noon
until 2PM. Yockey Motorsports Marketing Qualifying will take place at
3:30PM. The evening’s race program is set to start at 7PM. More
