Fred Campbell, The Man To
Beat At Berlin Raceway When The Sunoco Super Series Visits On June 14th
Salem, IN (June 4, 2003)
–
It probably comes as no surprise to any racer or fan who has
seen Fred Campbell drive the 7/16’s mile oval at Berlin Raceway, that Fred
Campbell is the early favorite to claim the victory in the Berlin Raceway
/ Sunoco Super Series 150 Presented By Georgetown Construction on
Saturday, June 14th. The fifty-year-old veteran driver from
near by Battle Creek, Michigan has driven many laps and has seen numerous
checkered flags in the 28 years he has been racing at Berlin Raceway.
Campbell claimed his tenth Berlin Raceway Late Model title in 2002,
capping off another great season.
“There is no trick setup or
a horsepower secret to winning at Berlin,” stated Campbell. “Experience is
the key, you have to have a lot of laps here to be successful. This is
going to be a great race, there is a lot of talent in the Sunoco Super
Series, and there is going to be a lot of good local racers competing
also.”
Campbell has also shown he
is not a one track wonder by claiming three championships at Kalamazoo
Speedway and two championships with the now defunct Iceman Series. In
addition, Campbell has shown he can win in other types of racecars by
winning the ARCA Re/Max Series event at Berlin Raceway in 2002.
Last season Campbell
competed in five Sunoco Super Series races with great success. Campbell
took the victory in the Sunoco Super Series first ever visit to Michigan
at the challenging oval at Kalamazoo Speedway on July 3rd. In two of the
most exciting Sunoco Super Series races of the 2002 season, Campbell
battled with another late model legend, Canada’s Junior Hanley, who has
become a Sunoco Super Series regular, the past couple of seasons. Campbell
finished second to Hanley at both Toledo Speedway, and at Baer Field
Speedway in August. The two legends raced numerous laps inches apart in
both events, with fans cheering on both drivers right to the finish.
Campbell currently races
with PBM Racing out of Zeeland, Michigan, which includes Campbell, his son
Brian who will also compete in the Sunoco Super Series event at Berlin
Raceway, and Vern Slagh the team owner. Slagh has competed at Berlin
Raceway for several seasons, but has done most of his racing the past two
seasons with the ARCA Re/Max Series. Brian made four starts with the
Sunoco Super Series in 2002 with 2 top ten finishes. Brian will make other
selected starts with the Sunoco Super Series in 2003 along with his dad,
but will also compete weekly in the Late Model Division at Berlin Raceway.
Fred Campbell has decided to not run for any more championships at this
time, he wants to just race when and were he wants, and that usually
spells trouble for the other competitors no matter were or what Campbell
shows up to race.
