Scott Hantz Wins Tough Sunoco Super
Series Battle At Berlin Raceway
Marne, MI (June 15, 2003) - Scott
Hantz came away with a tough victory in the
Berlin/Sunoco Super Series 150 Presented By Georgetown Construction,
Saturday night at Berlin Raceway. The first ever Sunoco Super Series event
at Berlin Raceway was one of the best ever races in the seven-year history
of the series. Hantz, the 2000 Sunoco Super Series Champion and current
series points’ leader, waged a hard fought battle with local racing legend
Fred Campbell over the last half of the 150-lap event.
"Man
what a great race," remarked Hantz. "I got to thank Tim Curry at
Finishline Fabricating for building me a great racecar. This was our first
time out in this car, and to win in front of this great
Berlin crowd makes it real
special. Fred raced me hard, neither one of us were going to give up, we
both wanted to win this race!"
Lansing, Michigan native Tom Hernly
pulled out to a 10 car length lead from his pole
starting position at the drop of the green flag. Campbell, who has raced
28 years at Berlin Raceway, started his charge to the front from his sixth
place starting position. Campbell reeled in Hernly and made the pass for
the lead on lap 21 while Hantz was biding his time saving his tires in the
early stages of the race.
The first of five yellows for the night
flew on lap 27 when Bull Baker made heavy contact with the spinning car of
Junior Hanley. Both cars were able to continue with some damage. The
second yellow also involved Baker, he crashed heavily into the outside
retaining wall in turn three after blowing a right front tire on lap 58.
Todd Oliver, in his Sunoco sponsored machine, was also caught up in the
wreck. Both cars were done for the night with heavy right front damage.
The second yellow tightened up the field
and set the stage for the Hantz / Campbell battle. Hantz challenged
Campbell quickly on the restart, finally slipping by to take the lead on
lap 63. Campbell wasn’t going down
easy with the large hometown crowd watching the event. Campbell fought
back as the cars caught the back of the field, and made a pass to retake
the lead on lap 94. Hantz faded just a little, but came battling back to
retake the lead on lap 113.
The third caution on lap 121 when Brian Rievley smacked the front stretch wall trying to avoid a spinning Dave
Jackson and the fourth caution on lap 133 for a spinning Brian Campbell,
tightened up the field for a great finish. Dave Kuhlman was suddenly a
factor in third place from his eleventh place starting position. The last
15 laps saw the top three battle for position all the way to the checkers. Hantz got the victory with Campbell holding off Kuhlman for second. Local
competitor’s Ross Meeuwsen and John Grega finished fourth and fifth
respectively, showing experience was the key for a good finish at the
tricky 7/16’s mile oval.
Fred Campbell was the Yockey Motorsports
Marketing Fast Qualifier. Tom Hernly Jr. was the Hubler Automotive Group /
Blake Carburetion Rookie Of The Race with his 8th place finish.
Scott Baker was the Lane Automotive / ISKY Cams Hard Charger Award winner,
Baker gained 15 positions to finish 6th. The Gladiator
GarageWorks Crew Chief Of The Race was Pat Anderson, Crew Chief for Scott
Hantz. Hantz claimed both the Cometic Gasket Halfway Leader Bonus and the
Finishline Fabricating Lap Leader Bonus. Goodyear Performance Awards went
to Dave Kuhlman and Scott Baker. Scott Hantz received the Sweet Move Of
The Race Award for his last pass of
Campbell for the win on lap
113.
The next Sunoco Super Series event will
be the Winchester 100 at Winchester Speedway on Saturday, June 21st.
