Salem, IN (April 20, 2003) - 20-year-old Shepherdsville, Kentucky
native Bobby Parsley claimed his first win with the Sunoco Super Series
Saturday night in the Yockey Motorsports 150 Presented By Great Deals
Coupon Magazine at Anderson Speedway. The well-deserved victory comes
after three years of hard effort from the low budget family oriented
team.
"I can’t believe I finally won one of these races," remarked Parsley.
"We’ve been trying hard to win a race with the Sunoco Super Series over
the past three years, we’ve been close a few times, but we always seemed
to have something go wrong. I want to thank my mom and dad, with out
them I wouldn’t be racing, we don’t have any sponsorship, and they have
to pay all the bills. I want to thank Junior Hanley and Bill Rievley,
both of them have been a tremendous help to our team, they’re the ones
that really helped us get fast enough to win tonight!"
Former ASA Racing Series veteran Jack Landis took the early lead when
he got a jump from his outside pole starting position on 17 year old
Terry Fisher Jr., making his first ever start with the Sunoco Super
Series. The first of 8 yellow flags flew on lap 2 when Greg Boone
slammed the turn 1 wall ending his evening. Landis continued to lead
over Fisher when the first of two red flags flew on lap 20 for a multi
car crash involving Eddie Van Meter, Evan Jackson, Andy Ponstein, Jeff
Lane, Kenny Tweedy, and Doug Greig. Ponstein and Lanes cars were done
for the evening with extensive damage. Jackson and Van Meter had their
cars parked for the evening by series officials after an on track
altercation between the two.
Landis managed to maintain control of the lead while several
potential challengers had problems with broken parts and spinning
machines. Parsley continued to chase down Landis from his third place
starting spot. Parlsey managed to pull inside of Landis and the two
raced several laps side by side until Parsley finally claimed the lead
on lap 85. Parsley had to survive several more restarts because of
cautions and another red flag situation caused by a scary crash
involving Doug Greig. Greig had returned to the racetrack after repairs
from an earlier crash. The car slammed hard into the first turn wall
with an apparent stuck throttle with no doghouse on the car. Greig was
shaken in the incident but later walked to the ambulance, which took him
to an area hospital for observation.
Parsley had to fight off hard charging Scott Hantz on the last
restart on lap 147, Hantz had battled his way to second from his 15th
place starting position. Parsley managed to hold off Hantz by two car
lengths at the finish to claim the very popular victory. Brent Downey
finished 3rd after starting 11th. Jack Landis managed to hold on to 4th
with a very ill handling racecar during the last half of the race.
Corbin, Kentucky driver Billy Barton finished 5th, his best Sunoco Super
Series finish.
Barton was the Hubler Group / Blake Carburetion Rookie Of The Race
Award winner. 2002 Sunoco Super Series Champion Joel Kauffman was the
Yockey Motorsports Marketing Fast Qualifier. Kauffman set a new track
record time of 11.935, the first ever Sunoco Super Series lap in the
11’s at Anderson Speedway. Bobby Murany won the Lane Automotive /ISKY
Racing Cams Hardcharger Award, Murany fought his way to a 9th place
finish after starting 28th. Jack Landis claimed the Kingen Interstate
Express Halfway Leader Bonus. Scott Hantz and Bobby Murany won Goodyear
Performance Awards. Bobby Parsley was voted the Sweet Manufacturing
"Sweet Move Of The Race" Award winner. Parsley’s crew chief Jeff Martin
was the Gladiator GarageWorks Crew Chief of the race.
The next Sunoco Super Series event will be a Co-sanctioned non-points
event at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, May
3rd with the O’Reilly Southern All Star Super Late Model Series.
