Salem,
Ind. (November 18, 2002) - As it has done every year since its
very first event on April 26th, 1997, the Sunoco Super Series will
open its 2003 race season at Anderson Speedway on Saturday night,
April 19th. The famous high-banked quarter mile racetrack located in
Anderson, Indiana has become the traditional season open for the
Sunoco Super Series, and traditionally has attracted a large car count
made up of series veterans, rookies and drivers who just want to give
the series a try at the first race of the season. Series veteran Kenny
Tweedy claimed the victory in the series season opener this year.
Unlike previous seasons such as 2002 with five events, Anderson
Speedway will only have three Sunoco Super Series events in 2002.
“We
have really enjoyed being the mainstay of the Sunoco Super Series
since it began in 1997,” commented Anderson Speedway owner Rick
Dawson, a former partner in the ownership of the series. “We wanted
to cut back the shows to three this season to make them more of a
special event for our fans. This will also give the series the
opportunity to expand its schedule a little more in other areas.”
The
Sunoco Super Series will once again sanction the 37th running of the
Anderson 400 on Saturday, July 12th. This event has been a
traditional highlight of the series each season, the 2002 event was
a good example with veteran open wheel driver Chet Fillip going in
the history books as the only driver to win the prestigious Little
500 sprint car event held each year at Anderson Speedway and the
Anderson 400. Fillip managed to fight off the challenges of Ron
Breese Jr., Scott Hantz and 2001 winner Bull Baker to pull off the
very exciting victory.
The
third and final event for the Sunoco Super Series at Anderson
Speedway in 2003 will be on Saturday, September 13th. That event in
2002 was won by Ron Breese Jr., his first ever Sunoco Super Series
victory, which came in front of a very emotional crowd.
