Toledo,
Ohio (May 26, 2002) - Becoming the youngest driver in Sunoco Super
Series history, Joel Kauffman drove to victory in the Sunoco 100
Presented By Budweiser at Toledo Speedway on Sunday, May 26. Driving the
LA West Luxury Vehicles / Choo Choo Customs / Prime Wheel / Flexvision /
ACC Chevrolet, Kauffman passed Matt Hagans on lap 68 and scored his
first ever victory in the Sunoco Super Series. Hagans finished second
followed by 1997 series champion Kenny Tweedy, Dave Kuhlman and track
record holder Junior Hanley.
"We
had to race are way to victory lane tonight. We didn't have this handed
to us," said 16-year-old Joel Kauffman in victory lane. "This is very
special to get win number one here in Toledo. It was great with Matt (Hagans)
finishing second and Kenny (Tweedy) in third. We are like a three car
team, so to finish ahead of those guys in my first ever win is awesome."
At
the drop of the green flag, Bull Baker leaped into the early lead
followed closely by Todd Currier. On the second trip around, Currier
wheeled his number one Scheck Mechanical and Technical Services
Chevrolet around the outside of Baker to take the lead. The first
caution took place on lap four when Bull Baker went spinning and
collected a large portion of the field ending the night for Fred
Campbell, J.R. Roahrig, Bobby Parsley, Dave Jackson and Terry Fisher.
When racing resumed, Currier continued to show the way, but Hagans started to
flex him muscle. He passed Currier on lap 10 after the Kalamazoo, Mich.,
driver got loose in the oil dry in turn one and two. Currier slipped
back to fifth position, doing a superb job on holding onto his racecar.
Just
past the lap 30 mark, Kauffman was starting to close on the rear deck
lid of Matt Hagans for the first position. As the battle for the lead
started to heat up, Dave Kuhlman was moving towards the front and Junior
Hanley, who was involved in the lap four incident began to also charge
to the front.
The
yellow flag flew on lap 67 when Robert Ohlmann and Rick Turner spun in
the second corner. After the green was displayed, Kauffman wasted little
time, powering around Matt Hagans coming off the second corner and
completing the pass going into the third corner.
Through the remaining circuits of the 100-lap event, Kauffman began to stretch
his lead over Hagans with Tweedy, Kuhlman, Hanley and Downey all
battling hard for position. Kauffman was ahead of Hagans by eight car
lengths at the checkered flag. Tweedy was able to fend off the
challenges and finish third with Kuhlman and Hanley rounding out the top
five. Downey finished sixth, with Currier seventh and Todd Oliver, Bobby
Murany and Harold Fair Jr. rounding out the top-ten performers.
Junior Hanley was the fastest of 40 competitors and established a track record
with a lap of 1. Eddie Van Meter was the winner of the Lane
Automotive/K&N Performance Filters Hard Charger, finishing in 12th
position after starting in 29th slot. Todd Currier
was the Hubler Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the Race. Dave Kuhlman
and Harold Fair Jr. were the winners of the Goodyear Performance Awards.
Joel Kauffman was the winner of the Sweet Move the Race.
