Junior Hanley Wins Burkhart Advertising 150
Anderson, Ind. (May 11, 2002) - After completing a late-race pass
on Scott Hantz, series veteran Junior Hanley became the third
different winner in three races with his victory in the Burkhart
Advertising 150 at Anderson Speedway. Driving the Rick Cole
Enterprises / Big Rigs Truck & Trailer Maintenance Ford, Hanley
pocketed $3,290 for his 11th career victory in the Sunoco Super
Series.
"The
car has been great all year, but we just had terrible starting
positions. The car has been the same each race. Tonight it all worked
out, " said race winner Junior Hanley. "Those guys are driving as hard
as they can, and it takes my tires a while to come in," added Hanley
about losing the lead to Hantz on lap 95.
At
the drop of the green flag, outside front-row starter Andy Ponstein
got the jump on Brian Ross and sailed into the early lead. In the
early stages, Joel Kauffman, Scott Hantz and Hanley chased the two
leaders.
Ponstein was able to maintain the lead and looked very strong in his
U.S. Pipe / Racing Performance Components / glasstree.com Pontiac.
Then while lapping Tim Phillips, Ross was able to squeeze under
Ponstein and the two-time series champion went out front on lap 27.
When
Ponstein dropped to second, he still had a strong car and closely
followed Ross around the quarter-mile oval. The front runners
continued to run nose-to-tail as halfway approached in the event. At
lap 68, third place Joel Kauffman dropped off the pace with
distributor problems. Ross led at halfway to collect the Kingen
Interstate Express Halfway Leader Award.
On
the 84th circuit, Ross and Ponstein made contact
in turn two with Ross spinning his Wade Construction / AT Performance
Products / Sullivan R.V. Chevrolet. Series officials placed Ponstein
to the tail of the field. They restarted 10th
and 11th.
Hanley was the restart leader on lap 94, but it was short lived, as
Hantz dove underneath the Canadian Legend and took the first position
on lap 95. The final caution of the event occurred on lap 106 when J.R.
Roahrig lost a wheel and Bobby Parsley made contact with the
front-stretch retaining wall. Both competitors were finished for the
event.
When
racing resumed, Hanley wasted little time, getting around Hantz on lap
123. Coming off the second corner, Hanley turned his number 66 under
Hantz and completed the pass in turn three. Through the later stages
of the event, Hantz's machine appeared to be suffering from handling
problems. Bull Baker made a late charge to pass Hantz for second. Jeff
Lane took third, with Hantz in fourth and Jim Crabtree Jr. rounding
out the top-five finishers.
Joel
Kauffman was the fastest of 28 competitors and earned his third
consecutive Tobacco Depot Fast Qualifier Award with a lap of 12.276
seconds / 73.314 mph. Greg Van Alst was the winner of the Lane
Automotive/K&N Performance Filters Hard Charger, finishing in 14th
position after starting in 24th slot. Andy
Ponstein was the Hubler Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the Race.
Jim Crabtree Jr. and Todd Oliver were the winners of the Goodyear
Performance Awards. Brian Ross led at lap 75 to win the Kingen
Interstate Express Halfway Leader Award. Junior Hanley was the winner
of the Sweet Move the Race. The Rug Doctor Rents Clean Sweep wasn't
claimed and will be worth $1,600 at Shadybowl Speedway on Saturday,
