Anderson,
Ind. (June 8, 2002) -
Fending off the challenge of Evan Jackson,
16-year-old Joel Kauffman captured his second career Sunoco Super Series
victory at Anderson Speedway on Saturday, June 8. Driving the number 44
Chevrolet sponsored by LA West Luxury Vehicles / Choo Choo Customs /
Prime Wheel / Flexvision / ACC, Kauffman dominated the event, leading
all 150 laps and collected $3,390 for his victory in the Sunoco 150.
With his second victory, Kauffman has extended his points lead over Matt
Hagans to a season best 27 markers.
"This victory was five times tougher than at Toledo; Evan raced me real clean
and I appreciate that," said Joel Kauffman in victory lane. "We are
pulling away each week in the points and we really want to win this
championship," added the 2001 rookie of the year.
At
the drop of the green flag, Joel Kauffman darted into the early lead
getting the jump on outside front-row starter Brent Downey. In the early
stages, Evan Jackson, Matt Hagans, Jeff Lane and fast qualifier Bobby
Parsley chased the two leaders. The initial caution flag occurred on lap
eight with Scott Wolfe, Tim Phillips and Dick Dunlevy all involved.
When racing resumed,
Kauffman continued to show the point, with Hagans
getting a super restart and advancing to third position, sending Jackson
back to fourth. On the 26th circuit, Greg Van Alst
spun in turn three and second-place runner Brent Downey couldn't avoid
and looped his number 25 Chevrolet.
On
the restart, Kauffman continued to pace the 26-car starting field, with
Hagans in second and Jackson, Lane and 2000 series champion Scott Hantz
in fifth slot. The top four machines raced nose-to-tail on the restart.
Then as
Hagans had to get on the brakes hard to not bump Kauffman, he
was forced to drift high as Jackson retook second and Lane went into
third place.
As
Kauffman was continuing to hold the first position with Jackson on the
rear deck lid of the number 44, Junior Hanley and Jim Crabtree Jr. were
making a charge to the top of the leader board.
Near halfway, Kauffman
showed the way with Jackson and Lane right behind the
race leader. The fifth caution occurred on lap 102 when Todd Currier
experienced ignition problems and dropped off the pace and Todd Oliver
made contact with the number one sending him spinning on the
backstretch.
The
green flag reappeared on lap 109, but it
as short-lived as Scott Hantz,
Bobby Parsley and Rick Turner were involved in an accident in turn one,
ending the racing action for Hantz and Turner. The
final stages of the event saw Kauffman keep his machine ahead of
Jackson, who was applying plenty of pressure.
Hanley finished in third
position. Jeff Lane finished fourth and Jim Crabtree Jr. rounded out the
top-five finishers.
Bobby
Parsley recorded his first pole and was the fastest of 30 cars to earn
the Tobacco Depot Fast Qualifier Award. Parsley of Shepherdsville Ky.,
toured the .250-mile oval in 12.328 seconds / 73.005 mph. Scott Wolfe
was the winner of the Lane Automotive/K&N Performance Filters Hard
Charger, finishing in 13th position after starting in 24
th
slot. Tim Phillips was the Hubler Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the
Race. Junior Haley and Todd Oliver were the winners of the Goodyear
Performance Awards. J.R. Roahrig was the winner of the Sweet Move the
Race.
