2002 Dayton
Thanksgiving Weekend Trade Show & Auction Notes
Salem, Ind.
(December 2, 2002) - The Sunoco Super Series had a booth at the 2002
Dayton Thanksgiving Weekend Racing Trade Show & Auction this past
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There where several series car owners
and racers at the show. The following are some of the facts and rumors
heard at the show:
The big topic of
conversation was what is going to happen with the Winchester 400 with
the ASA Racing Series not returning to the famed Winchester Speedway in
2003. No one knows for sure the answer to that question, but Ed Friddle
of Car Brite, who did an outstanding job this past season promoting the
Car Brite 200 on Winchester 400 weekend was seen talking several times
with series director Glenn Luckett. Rumor is there will be more
information out very soon about the Winchester 400, and another "first
time event on Saturday" of that weekend!
The
best car at the auction was the late model of former series part-time
competitor Todd Braun. Braun is the owner of Chad Blount's NASCAR
Busch Series team, which recently relocated from Winamac, Ind., to
North Carolina. Bobby and Chad Blount were at the show with Todd of
Braun Motorsports. Todd's car was bought by Indianapolis businessman
Don Napier, the car owner for C.A.R.S. 2002 Late Model Champion Robert
Amos. The rumor is Amos will make some starts with the series in 2003.
Ken
Muller and Eddie Van Meter were at the show, selling some old
equipment and finding a few bargains. Looks like Muller will be the
car owner for team mates Eddie Van Meter and Todd Oliver, they will be
making some big announcements in the near future about their 2003
plans. Indianapolis native Steve Keller recently purchased a turn-key
car from Muller Motorsports to run a few series races in 2003.
Another Indianapolis native looking for a "new" car to drive with the
series next year was Doug Grieg. The Speeddrome veteran and former ASA
competitor has attempted to make a handful of series races over the
past several years with little success. They are looking to upgrade
their equipment to be more competitive in 2003.
2000
series champion and rookie of the year Scott Hantz was also seen at
the show. Hantz will be competing at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola,
Fla., this coming weekend in Saturday's Snowflake, a warm-up race to
the big Snowball Derby on Sunday. Hantz will also be racing at New
Smyrna during Speedweeks in February. Hantz's team is preparing to
make a run for the 2003 Sunoco Super Series championship with a new
"secret chassis"!
Scott
Eggman, who raced part-time with the series in 2000 and 2001, will
make a return to the series on a part-time basis again in 2003. Eggman
plans on competing mostly at Anderson Speedway and IRP. Eggman spent
most of 2002 rebuilding and updating his car to be more competitive!
17-year-old Kris Deckard was at the show with his father. They plan on
racing with the series in 2003, they are trying to secure sponsorship
to run for rookie of the year honors!
Anderson businessman Ray Yockey reports he will be helping former
series champion Brian Rievley return possibly full-time with the
series in 2003. We can expect to hear more announcements from that
team in the near future!
The
"Zero Hero", Tom Jones was strolling the aisles, Jones plans on having
a car at the "big shows" with the Sunoco Series in 2003.
J.R.
Roahrig made an appearance on Saturday. His team is currently fixing
their car from the hard crash Roahrig had at I-70 Speedway the week
before IRP. Roahrig will be back with the series in 2003, how they do
at the beginning of the season will determine how many races they will
run in 2003.
K-Motion Valve Springs owners Bob & Gayle Kamp were visiting the show.
They recently purchased Benton County Speedway, a 1/4 mile dirt track.
Bob & Gayle cannot attend the 2002 awards banquet, but they wanted to
extend their congratulations to the top 15 teams in series points!
Rumor
has it that Bull Baker has purchased some new "horsepower" for the
2003 season. The two-time winner in 2002 wants to be in victory lane
more in 2003!
Sunoco
Super Series owners RJ Scott and Glenn Luckett will be at the
Performance Racing Industry Show this coming Thursday and Friday.
Check the series web site next weekend, as they will have more facts
and rumors to report from that show!
